Our story

Founded in 1952, genU grew from a small play centre into one of Australia’s largest care providers, dedicated to building inclusive communities nationwide.

How we started

Our story started in 1952 when a small group of parents in Geelong, Victoria, dreamed of a world for their children where disability would not stand in the way of their opportunities and potential.

The parents created a play centre, which became known as Karingal. As their children grew, Karingal grew, creating new, inclusive spaces and services for people with disability.

In 2017, the best of two trusted and respected care organisations, Karingal and St Laurence, came together under the new name genU, expanding our supports to cater for all stages of life.

Since then, we have continued to grow, adding a range of services and organisations into the genU family to ensure we have the best people to build genuinely inclusive communities across Australia. These included well-regarded organisations such as Li-Ve Tasmania and Activ Foundation in Western Australia.

Today, we have a national presence as one of Australia’s largest care providers, but local knowledge, with more than 6,000 passionate staff across the nation.

So, whatever support you need, whether you're young or more experienced in life, we're not far away.
